Seed treatments have been around for centuries and are still growing and evolving. With an estimated CAGR of almost 10%, according to a ResearchAndMarkets Report, the seed treatment market is expected to reach more than $11.5 billion by 2029. The drivers of this trend are continual advancements in technology, in equipment, and in the adoption of biological and biostimulant seed treatments.

Expanding pest control while reducing user and environmental impact are major advantages of seed treatments and continue to be important. Sustainability practices have been around for thousands of years but have gained heightened consumer awareness in the last decade, and the industry has responded with sustainability and regenerative agriculture practices.

Seed treatments began in the early Egyptian and Roman periods when onion sap was one of the first recorded uses. Over the next few centuries, salt water, copper, arsenic and mercury were all used as seed treatments as surface disinfectants and protectants. In 1968, the first systemic fungicide was launched, and crop protection and seed industries have developed and adopted new classes since the 1990s.

Previous studies have evidenced frequent patterns in the reduction of soybean seed quality parameters depending on the time of harvest. The objective of this work is to model the variation in soybean seed germination (SG) as a function of weather variables during the pre-harvest window to support the development of predictive tools in the early selection of seed lots.
