The Germinative Power of Soybean Seed, a presentation at the Argentinian Seed Congress

AgriThority® Research Manager Ignacio Colonna presented “Association of Pre-harvest Weather Variables with the Germinative Power of Soybean Seed in the central Pampean region” at the Argentinian Seed Congress. Read the summary below.

Association of pre-harvest weather variables with the germinative power of soybean seed in the central Pampean region

Previous studies have evidenced frequent patterns in the reduction of soybean seed quality parameters depending on the time of harvest. The objective of this work is to model the variation in soybean seed germination (SG) as a function of weather variables during the pre-harvest window to support the development of predictive tools in the early selection of seed lots. Based on daily data of maximum temperature (Tmax), minimum (Tmin), dew point (DP) and rainfall (Pp) from representative meteorological stations of the central farming region in Argentina, 30-day pre-harvest mean values were estimated for each of 13,858 samples evaluated.

        • First, regression models were adjusted based on mean yearly values of SG to allow initial selection of weather variables more strongly associated with across-year variation.
        • In a second step, threshold values for combinations of these variables were determined to allow for discrimination of samples with SG less than 80%.

Variable Tmax showed a strong positive correlation (R2 = 0.73) with average annual SG across all environments, with an increase rate of 2.8% for each degree above 24.5 ° C, while Pp was significant (R2 = 0.8 ) only for environments with Tmax under 26 ° C, with a decrease rate of 1.4% per 10 mm change in Pp.

The percentage of total samples with SG <80% in environments with Tmax <26 and Pp> 120 mm was 41%, showing a significant difference (p <0.01) with the environments Tmax> 26-Pp <120mm (7%) , Tmax> 26-Pp> 120mm (13%) and Tmax <26-Pp <120mm (19%).

This model suggests that it is possible to generate simple decision tools for early selection of seed lots based on weather variables.
