After two years of retreat, agritech capital appears to be stirring again. According to the AgFunder’s 2026 Global AgriFoodTech Investment Report, global Agrifoodtech funding held at roughly $16.2 billion in 2025, only modestly down on the prior year. However, under this flatline is a telling shift in the farm, food production and biological technologies segments where deals grew by 7% year-on-year, a value of around $9 billion even as overall deal count fell by 12%. PitchBook’s H1 2026 data tells a similar story of selectivity rather than retreat. Most of deals during this period (valued at $2.4 billion) were concentrated in later-stage companies with demonstrable field return on investment (ROI). This suggests that investors have not entirely walked away from agriculture but have become far more exacting about what they will fund. The biological crop input segment is one of the areas where that exactness is most visible, and the deal calendar has been busiest at both ends of the size spectrum.
Among the major players, BASF completed its acquisition of biological insecticide specialist AgBiTech from Paine Schwartz Partners to strengthen its position in the “fast-growing” segment. Syngenta also struck a strategic partnership with Groundwork BioAg to commercialize mycorrhizal technology, layered on its 2024 acquisition of Intrinsyx Bio and integration of Novartis’s natural-compound strain library. FMC signed a definitive agreement to divest its India commercial crop protection business to Crystal Crop Protection for US$252 million, reshaping its go-to-market footprint.
The same logic is playing out further down the size ladder, among emerging biological platform builders. In March 2026, Frontera Ag, a global biological agriculture platform, signed a definitive agreement to acquire PlantSustain, a plant- and soil-health technology company, from venture builder Generation Food Rural Partners, folding its crop-resilience pipeline into Frontera’s formulation, delivery and regulatory infrastructure.
Across both size tiers, every transaction is a bet that a specific technology, dossier, or market position will perform agronomically, regulatorily, and commercially well beyond the signing date. Therefore, these bets must be backed by substantial evidence and rigorous technical due diligence to avoid costly post-deal surprises.
Why the Diligence Bar is Rising
Technical due diligence, not just financial or legal due diligence, is a crucial gating step for various reasons:

Smaller acquisitions carry the same categories of technical and regulatory risk as large strategic deals but with less internal capacity to detect them, less negotiating leverage to price them in, and less room to absorb a costly surprise post-close. That combination is why independent due diligence is particularly critical for deals that look “too small to need it.”
What Dealmakers Need to Validate
A rigorous technical due diligence process applied to biologicals target, typically spans key interconnected workstreams such as:

A missed regulatory data gap can delay a projected launch by a full season or more, while overstated performance or sustainability claims can undermine grower trust and channel support long after a deal closes.
